Nova Scotia Community-based Feed-in Tarrif

Invest in Nova Scotia Wind Energy

The Nova Scotia Community-based Feed-in Tariff (COMFIT) program enables one or a combination of the entities below to construct small and large wind energy projects, sign power purchase agreements with Nova Scotia Power Inc., and feed excess electricity into the grid at a pre-determined rate.

Please browse the different eligible community groups to find out how your organization can participate in this exciting new provincial program!

University

Wind energy projects provide universities with opportunities to invest intelligently in the growing renewable energy sector and generate revenue, increase energy security, and free money for student programs and services. Also, these devices act as a learning tool for students and the wider community and are strong symbols of environmental and social responsibility.

Nova Scotia universities are eligible to participate in the provincial COMFIT program, provided they meet the necessary requirements.

Eligibility criteria

  • Wind turbines greater than 50 kW and those equal to or less than 50 kW
  • Only new turbines or those not currently connected to the grid qualify to receive the feed-in tariff
  • Must be connected to the provincial electricity grid at the distribution level (typically less than 6 MW)
  • Must own at least 50% of the turbine or an entity that owns the turbine
  • Must conduct a wind resource assessment to determine a viable location for turbine siting
  • Must be issued COMFIT approval by the Minister

Municipality

Investing in wind energy projects provides municipalities with a means of offsetting their carbon footprints, reducing electricity bills, and adding an additional stream of revenue. Wind turbines are symbols of both environmental stewardship and community leadership and promote renewable energy within the region.

Nova Scotia municipalities or wholly owned subsidiaries of a municipality are eligible to participate in the provincial COMFIT program, provided they meet the necessary requirements.

  • Must be located within the municipality or an immediately adjacent municipality
  • Must own at least 50% of the turbine or an entity that owns the turbine
  • Must conduct a wind resource assessment to determine a viable location for turbine siting
  • Must be issued COMFIT approval by the Minister

Mi’kmaq Band Council

Mi’kmaq Band Council’s have the potential to reduce the environmental footprints and electricity bills of their communities and earn money over the long-term by investing smartly in wind energy. Additionally, such projects provide communities with increased control over local resources and improve energy independence, while demonstrating environmental stewardship and encouraging others to care for future generations.

Mi’kmaq Band Councils and the businesses they control are eligible to participate in the provincial COMFIT program, provided they meet the necessary requirements.

  • Must be located on reserve lands or lands leased or owned by a band-controlled entity
  • Must own at least 50% of the turbine or an entity that owns the turbine
  • Must conduct a wind resource assessment to determine a viable location for turbine siting
  • Must be issued COMFIT approval by the Minister

Cooperative

Cooperatives have the opportunity to promote environmental sustainability and energy security, while receiving financial returns over the long-term, by investing in local and clean wind energy generation. Installing wind turbines can reduce energy costs and ‘green’ your business, improving company image in the process.

Cooperatives are eligible to participate in the provincial COMFIT program, provided they meet the necessary requirements.

  • Majority of members must reside within Nova Scotia
  • At least 25 members must reside within the municipality where the wind turbine is located
  • Must own at least 50% of the turbine or an entity that owns the turbine
  • Must conduct a wind resource assessment to determine a viable location for turbine siting
  • Must be issued COMFIT approval by the Minister

Not-For-Profit

Investing in wind energy is a great method for Not-For-Profit’s to express their views and educate the public about environmental and social responsibilities. In addition, wind turbines can provide electricity savings and long-term revenue gains, while helping achieve local energy security.

Not-For-Profit organizations are eligible to participate in the provincial COMFIT program, provided they meet the necessary requirements.

Eligibility criteria

  • Wind turbines greater than 50 kW and those equal to or less than 50 kW

  • Must own at least 50% of the turbine or an entity that owns the turbine
  • Must conduct a wind resource assessment to determine a viable location for turbine siting
  • Must be issued COMFIT approval by the Minister

CEDIF

Wind energy is a rapidly growing sector that is becoming increasingly cost competitive with conventional energy generation methods. Community Economic Development Funds (CEDIFs) have the opportunity to invest in this growing industry, earn profits over the long-term, and attribute to local energy security and environmental sustainability.

CEDIFs are eligible to participate in the provincial COMFIT program, provided they meet the necessary requirements.
